Program - ‘Across the Top’ Macassan Voyage - 9 days

Dates: 7th – 15th May 2009
Cost: A$4080.00 / person
Macassan Voyages offers a nine-day journey of discovery into
Aboriginal history, culture, art, and nature on a modern sea voyage tracing
Macassan and Aboriginal encounters across the Arnhem Land coast.
Step back in time and into another culture as you follow the local stories
of contact between Yolngu people and Macassan traders who visited Australia’s
north coast in the 18th and 19th centuries from what is modern day Indonesia.
This voyage drops anchor at more than 11 historically and culturally significant
locations between Darwin and the eastern tip of the Northern Territory,
and takes in some of the most pristine and breathtaking scenery in Australia.
Voyagers will explore magnificent ancient rock art galleries with senior
traditional owners, visit some of the largest known Macassan campsites
on the north Australian coast, and be welcomed into the homelands of the
Yolngu people to hear their stories, and experience their culture and daily
lives in one of the most remote parts of Australia.
This is a unique experience of Arnhem Land that has never been on offer
before.
