$60, including continental breakfast, for non-guests

Begin your day in Nhulunbuy with a guided walk around the Gayngaru Wetlands (Town Lagoon), where you can experience the magic of an Arnhem Land sunrise as a chorus of birdsong welcomes the new day.

Set amongst tall stands of paperbarks, Gayngaru is home to about 200 species of birds and a diverse array of flora and fauna.

Once a popular Yolngu hunting area and important source of fresh water and food, Gayngaru remains a culturally significant site today.

Your Yolngu guide will provide an informative commentary from a traditional perspective, explaining the importance of the region to the Yolngu people, the history of the wetlands, traditional uses for plants you’ll see along the walk, and information on the spectacular birdlife.

The walk follows a circuit around the lagoon, with viewing areas for bird watching and photography. You may even be lucky enough to glimpse a crocodile from the safety of the over-water observation platform.

To complete your perfect morning, you will finish your sunrise walk with a continental breakfast, tea and coffee in the pleasant surroundings of the Walkabout Lodge.
